I. 58. bâgo nâ jâ re nâ jâ “Do not go to the garden of flowers! O Friend! go not there; In your body is the garden of flowers. Take your seat on the thousand petals of the lotus, and there gaze on the Infinite Beauty.”
Written by Kabir and translated by Rabindranath Tagore

We deeply bow down to this quote and allow our practice to flow from here. Keep your attention on the top of your head till you feel sensations on top, the touch of air on your head, and a pressure felt from above acting on our head which could be soft or with force. Keep your awareness and breath stationed here and ‘sight see’ into the vastness and height of consciousness living above head. Wait till ranges of beautiful colours, images and Divine Presences open up. Wait for the sound of silence and peace to open up. Wait for all other infinite qualities present, whatever you find here on earth their sources live above and descends into us, into nature and into the world. May this practice be a companion for us each day. Slowly the thousand petals lotus will be in bloom for us in our own way by Grace.
We normally live inside our head, emotions, feelings or sensations. It would indeed be a yogic life in the practical world if we can learn to keep our awareness on top of our head turned to above and think, talk, write and act from there. We will be then open to a new consciousness and a new life.
Now stationed above connect to a thousand different tiny points / cells across our body. In the beginning this would appear difficult. Gently persist in your sadhana and keep your attention within all parts of your body simultaneously. This is a beautiful posture now. We are seated on top of our head open to above and we are also present within our body. Slowly relax all the points / cells and let them be receptive to soak in and receive and hold the Beautiful Qualities that keep opening up above our head and flowing into us.
We can also be stationed above and connect to all our chakras, one by one and then simultaneously, allowing them to flower in the Light and Beauty of the Consciousness above.
Foot Note:
Rabindranath Tagore, The Mother and Sri Aurobindo knew each other. Rabindranath Tagore met Sri Aurobindo in 1928. An interested reader can read about their meeting in:
“Every time I offer incense or prostrate before the altar in my hermitage, I do not do this as an individual self but as a whole lineage. Whenever I walk, sit, eat, or practice calligraphy, I do so with the awareness that all my ancestors are within me in that moment. I am their continuation. Whatever I am doing, the energy of mindfulness enables me to do it as “us,” through interbeing, not as “me.” When I hold a calligraphy brush, I know I cannot remove my father from my hand. I know I cannot remove my mother or my ancestors from me. They are present in all my cells, in my gestures, in my capacity to draw a beautiful circle. Nor can I remove my spiritual teachers from my hand. They are there in the peace, concentration, and mindfulness I enjoy as I make the circle. We are all drawing the circle together.”
Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist Zen master, poet, scholar, and peace activist who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Excerpted from The Art of Living.
Those of us who have followed works of Thich Nhat Hanh have deep regard for him. There are many tiny insights in his quote. We highlight them and invite all of us to explore how to bring them into our practices.
1.There is a certain aspect of deeper body work that goes beyond the individual and her/his healing. Entering this impersonal and universal dimension of body work, yet done deep in the cells of our body is fascinating.
2. To develop subtle awareness such that we are able to detect the interfacing-embedded thoughts, emotions, energies, sensations and currents within our body is sometimes painful in the beginning and yet it brings forth deep awareness and opportunities for clearing if we are in some deeper body work practice. Thich Nhat Hanh has used this term – “We do not exist independently. We inter-are.” It perhaps would help us to go beyond ego to acknowledge that lot of what we are experiencing in our cells is from our ancestors and people whom we have interacted with.
3. If we manage to do this practice mindfully we may observe in the small things, like the way we hold a cup of tea, the way we sip it, the way we walk, our body language, our voice, our facial expressions, the way we eat, what we eat, how do we respond to illness is all programmed into the cells of our body.
4. Now we come to the most fascinating insight. In the beautiful circle that is drawn through his hand through a brush, he notices the influence of his father, mother and ancestors. There is deep peace and acceptance beneath this experience. First is awareness of influence of others. And for most of us this could lead to irritation and annoyance. In this case we notice deep acceptance and through these ‘cells’ of his hand is drawn a beautiful circle. We can aspire to do our own practices of acceptance and memory work of releasing all stuck energies to come to a living and evolving acceptance of others influences in the way our body and cells are operating in the present.
5. Then comes the master clue. The influence of spiritual teachers on his hand is seen as peace, concentration and mindfulness. This opens up an insight in our deeper body work where we become aware of our body’s substance and its different points / cells. We then connect our body’s cells in a impersonal and universal way to our Divine or Master in an intimate way. Slowly we enter Their subtle body and subtle presence. If we can be in this state with eyes closed or eyes open, while meditating or while doing daily activities slowly the ‘Qualities’ present within the Divine or Master cast their presence within our body’s cells. This is Pran pratishthaof our body’s cells, an act of great humbleness and the underlying purpose of our existence of our life, beneath all other purposes.
Let us explore two quotes to glean some Inner Practices from Swami Vallalar’s intense, loving and Graceful Sadhana
“Fix your attention to the eyebrow centre with awareness, open it, see the light and get delighted. This is the mean of salvation; the last dance is coming from there.”
Page 136, Vallalar Messager of Grace Light by DhayaMesrobian
We connect to these two quotes and connect to the Presence and the White Subtle Divine Substance of Vallalar to guide us to do our own practices, on the basis of where we are in our own journeys. A lot depends on our purification and perfection of the different parts of our being on a ongoing basis. We offer few points for practice that has been emerging through our experiential research into Integral Yoga and some of the deeper body work practices we have been exploring in small groups.
INSIGHTS
Practice:
With humility we can take our awareness far above our head and above our mind. Where in the vastness and height above we find the Light present visible or as a felt sense?
We can access the Light ever present Above from the top of our head or we can take our awareness within our eyebrow center and we can wait. Waiting is the key aspect. We need to drop our goals and agendas here. Any benefit we wish to get from this too needs to be dropped. We are doing this practice to connect to our Masters and unite with our Divine. As we wait the silence, flame lit upwards or inner gaze opens up within our eye brow center, which by itself could expand. To be present even more here you can place your breath in this region and wait. Slowly the ‘eye’ of the gaze or aspiration can be turned to the ‘Vast Unbound Space’ Above head extending height after height to Greater heights. And in this posture we take the attitude to be prepared to wait till eternity. We take this posture during mediation, eating, working, exercising, working, conversing with others, and at all times.
As Grace Light descends from Above within our eyebrow center, we can learn to keep our body relaxed, conscious and more and more receptive so that the incoming Light can be experienced as an ‘inswelling’ of Light or Love in the subtle substance and cells of our body.
SUBTLE INSIGHT FROM A PRACTITIONER:
1) Keeping the body relaxed, conscious and more and more receptive is a prerequisite for the descent of the Grace Light
2) Once The Grace Light descends… Grace works. It is through our absolute surrender only Grace will work.
We need to lose and release all our so-called hold and control of ourselves. Until we are holding some strings Grace Light will not function fully, but partially blessing us with some subtle realm experiences to keep us steadfast in our faith.
“The Vast Grace Light reigns eminently over the great void, beyond the domain of speech and mind.”
This is from one of the 1597 verses Vallalar wrote as Jothi Agaval in less than a night on the 18 April 1872.

INSIGHTS FOR OUR INNER PRACTICE
We can check where in this ‘now’ we can sense deeper silence or void:
1. Above the domain of our mind and its thoughts
2. Beneath our emotions within the cave of our heart
3. Beyond the vast space of infinity all surrounding us
4. Deep below our feet or below our individual and collective unconsciousness
With an attitude of mystery, of something sacred we are doing and holding a space of ‘no matter how much there is knowledge, I really do not know this domain’, we place our awareness on this void that exists in any of these dimensions and place our inner gaze beyond this void or deep silence.
Many aspire for the experience of void, stillness, nothingness etc. Let us also aspire for the Grace Light Vast that reigns eminently above our throat, forehead, top of the head regions and over the void regions. And yet as Above is also present within cave of heart, beyond vastness and below feet.
In a very simple way if we learn from Swami Vallalar we can chant a mantra to invoke the Grace Light Supreme. We can connect to the void, silence and peace and both within and without we can keep on living our life invoking this Grace Light. We seek the Grace to be more and more united with this light, upto the point that this Grace Light permeates within our mind, vital and body cells.
“Mantra is not the name of God, nor is it important to know its meaning. Mantra simply has to be repeated for the vibrations to be effective. Mantra is dhvani or sound vibrations, which creates similar sound frequencies in different parts of the body and mind.”
Sri Vijnana Bhairava Tantra – The Ascent Swami Satyasangananda Saraswati
INSIGHTS
First take for practice a simple mantra like OM, AUM or MAA
Take your awareness deep within your body and feel its substance
Feel your breath flowing through the substance of your body
Now chant your small mantra and feel its vibration
Keep it chanting for some time and stay with the vibrations and feel it stirring the substance or matter of your body
Continue the practice from time to time for a few seconds with eyes open, alongside your regular works
